"It’s all in the eyes"

The eyes they say are the windows to the soul. Without doubt they are a major focal point to photographer Jim Coupland of JCP Images of Grantham.

Looking at his portfolio it’s easy to see what he means. His portraits are stunningly beautiful, well composed and sharply in focus, but he has somehow been able to bring the subject’s eyes to life. No longer is this a picture of a person; it seems to BE the person. It’s quite an achievement. One only has to cover up the eyes looking back at you to render the subjects faces to nothing but a mere mask.

Revealing the eyes again is like receiving an electric charge; that infinitesimal spark of life. And as you look into their gaze yet further it’s possible, in some of them, to see the outline of Jim himself, reflected back in the iris of some elegant model or in the giggling eyes of a child. He says it’s an obsession. Certainly such photographs could not be achieved without some form of passion.

Looking further into his collection, you come across action shots that are nothing short of staggering. Photographs of high-speed motorbikes tearing down the racetrack are spot-on perfect. And of course, as you zoom in on the rider’s face behind the visor, his deadly serious concentration is there, in his eyes. Here and there are celebrities; Bob Geldof plucking an electric guitar and other well-known faces. But it’s the pictures of ordinary people who wanted simply to capture something of who they are that reveal the artist in Jim.

With breathtaking simplicity and perfect lighting, his pictures go far beyond what we imagine a photograph can do. Beautiful girls seem more beautiful, the bonds between parent and child seem stronger, glamour on the catwalk appears yet more glamorous; you get the picture. Well, that is, after Jim and his trusty camera have taken it first of course.
